PEPE RODRIGUEZ
CHRISTIE´S LIFE OR DEAD
The reection of life and death is a common thread for this ironic fable. The manipulation of the animal and a catalog, from the renowned auction house Christie’s, are fundamental for the creation of these scenes.
The project that includes eleven mixed media sculptures each with a taxidermy animal, and eleven photographic triptychs that are Digital prints on cotton paper
Rodriguez work method is consistent of works in series. The Christie’s, Life of Death photographic triptychs investigates different outcomes for in each sculpture intervening the dominant elements of each composition. Roles and power schemes are inverted as new outcomes are proposed by the figures trapped in each environment. Each sculpture is concealed with a white cloth that marks the transition of the narrative and a message on human morality.
Each imprisoned element is liberated either physically or metaphorically when the change to original sculpture is produced. By making a photographic sketch for each sculpture, Rodriguez can install both the sculptures and the triptychs together to create a diverse and dynamic display of art objects that both surround and stand next to the viewer.
In this series of sculptures, Pepe Rodriguez uses a common theme, the Christies’ Catalog, to thread the project together. Each sculpture creates an ironic narrative, extracted from the artwork or the titles of the different catalog editions, the integration of the actual catalog as a fundamental part of the piece as well as the theme of entrapment. Each piece contains an element of taxidermy, and visual details recreated in three dimensions that have been appropriated form the original catalog cover.
The Christie’s, Life of Death photographic triptychs is the continuation of the narrative Rodriguez addresses in each sculpture, playfully question logical power schemes and invert the roles of the trapped and the trapper, when each sculpture is concealed with a white cloth, as though by magic the elements are transformed. When the sculptures are revealed in the last photograph of the series the composition changes, revealing new stories and new alternative to the power roles originally presented.
Statement
In the eld of creative thinking I am stimulated by my own particular experiences, the everyday occurrences as much as those that passed. I capture what is emotional and spiritual in my life that materializes in conceptual works charged with symbolic and ironic content. My own training and knowledge about the contemporary art world forms an essential part of this incentive and are utilized uninhibited by the viewer.
Technology as much as the technical professionals are used as tools in the development of my work and that, in some cases, in addition to employing them as a medium they play a fundamental role in my work and are merely used as the wrapping for the message.
